The Wine: Their vines are planted at 610m above sea level and the all the grapes from this 2019 Chardonnay are hand harvested and picked when possible according to the lunar cycle. Winemaking is fairly simple and hassle free at the winery. A short press cycle is used to extract the precious juice and it is cold settled over night. The next morning the juice is racked, taking with it some of the light solids. The juice is put into barrels of 228L and 500L where it undergoes primary and secondary fermentation. 20% of these barrels are new, each year. It will spend 12 months in barrel, only being removed for the new vintage.

One of the best Chardonnay’s I’ve had for some time. Complex and compelling. Such purity and precision with immense concentration and class. The nose offers a perfect integration of winemaking and site derived characters. Layer upon layer. The palate has a tight line of acidity, but waves of flavour and depth. This is a must try wine.

Producer Profile

Cobaw Ridge

Cobaw Ridge winery was established in 1985 by Alan and Nelly Cooper. Vines were planted on granitic, sandy soil in the cool climate Macedon Ranges, on the cusp of the Great Dividing Range at some 610m. Their positioning, in a natural amphitheatre, provides the perfect place to produce terroir-driven wines. 100% estate grown, they are now fully certified organic and biodynamic, something they are very proud of, and deservedly so.
