The Wine: Shiraz or Syrah as it’s known in its spiritual home of France, is one of the most important grapes on the planet. The most famous and historic examples hail from vineyards of the northern Rhône, in places such as Hermitage and Côte Rôtie. The grape is thought to have arrived in Australia with James Busby in 1832. Today, Australia has the second largest plantings after France and it’s an integral part of the wine landscape.

The wine went through a very long and slow ferment before it was aged for 14 months in 500 litre French oak puncheon and stainless steel. Very bright fruits on the nose with raspberry and blue fruits making up the mix. There’s an abundance of spice and non fruit character – olive, earth and smoke. The palate is full without being overdone and there is freshness and depth.

Producer Profile

Frankland River is one of the five subregions of the Great Southern Geographic Indication. It’s located 250 kilometres east of Margaret River. It has a Mediterranean climate with a very diverse soil type. This enables a large diversity of varieties to thrive throughout the region.

Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam co-founded Frankland Estate in 1988. They have been instrumental in raising the profile, not only of their regions, but of Riesling in Australia. Much of the ground work these days is done by Hunter Smith, his sister Elizabeth and her husband Brian Kent.
