2017 Pierre Ménard ‘Clos des Mailles’ Anjou Blanc: There is three parcels in this one vineyard – one is 25 years old, one is 100 years old and the other is 8 years old. This is textbook, modern Chenin Blanc. Pierre works very hard not to have botrytis fruit in the wines. He likes it clean and pristine as to not detract from the mineral component. This is all about yellow plum, quince, flint, smoke and talc. Super complexity and highly attractive wine. The palate is racy, long and beautifully complex. I highly recommend these wines. They are some of the most exciting wines I tried in 2019 and Im delighted to be working with Pierre.

This is textbook, modern Chenin Blanc. Pierre works very hard not to have botrytis fruit in the wines. He likes it clean and pristine as to not detract from the mineral component. Wonderfully expressive style of Chenin Blanc. Smoke and mineral components mix with quince and spice. Honey and sweet spices abound. The palate is racy, long and beautifully complex. I highly recommend these wines. They are some of the most exciting wines I tried in 2019 and I’m delighted to be working with Pierre.

2018 Pierre Ménard ‘La Varenne de Chanzé’ Anjou Blanc: This vineyard is just a short walk from the Clos des Mailles. The vines here are slightly young having been planted over the last decade. The wine is more on the citrus side while Mailles is a little richer and more exotic. There’s still plenty of stuffing. Orange and yellow plum mix with flint and stone. The palate is leaner with a nice phenolic grip holding everything in place. Very impressive and classy style.

Producer Profile

Pierre Ménard

After studying wine in the Agronomic school of Angers, Pierre travelled the world to learn about the different processes and made wine in Canada, New Zealand and Hungary. Only in his late twenties, Pierre started to produce wine in the Layon in 2013, using a 100-year-old Chenin Blanc vineyard laying on schist called “Le Quart des Noëls”. The plot used to belong to his parents who withdrew some of the vines from the cooperative contract. Since his first vintage Pierre’s wines have been met with critical acclaim. There is no botrytis in his dry wines and although wines of this region have typically had botrytis, today, a number of up-and-coming young vignerons have recognised the negative impact botrytis can have on a dry wine, and they see the precision and energy that can be found in vinifying Chenin Blanc grown on the slate and schist of western Anjou totally and truthfully dry, with not a whisper of botrytis in the blend. These wines are super limited.
