The Wine: Chenin blanc (known also as Pineau de la Loire in the Loire Valley and Steen in South Africa). This is a high acid grape variety and can make a diversity of styles from sparkling all the way to the most unctuous and luscious dessert wines. In 1999, DNA analysis has shown that Chenin blanc has a parent-offspring relationship with the Jura wine grape Savagnin. Additional DNA evidence shows that Chenin blanc shares a sibling relationship with Trousseau and Sauvignon blanc (both grapes the likely offspring of Savagnin) which strongly suggest that it is Chenin blanc that is the offspring and Savagnin is the parent variety.

These wine have an immense purity to them. Crafted like Chablis to produce very racy, clean, and vibrant styles of wine. Here there are florals, chalk and pithy citrus characters working in harmony. The palate is fine and long with depth of minerality seldom seen in other wines of this region.

Producer Profile

The enchanting Loire Valley wine region is a marvellous place to explore with its many spectacular Chateaux and Grand Maison’s. It’s a large area, in fact, the Loire River is the largest in France. This wine comes from the Anjou region near the city of Angers. There is quite a diversity of soil, but these grapes predominately come from shallow soils of grey schist and rhyolite (volcanic soil) clay.

Remember this name Thibaud Boudignon he’s a star in the making. Originally from Bordeaux he spent time in Burgundy working at Philipe Charlopin in Gevrey-Chambertin before moving to Savennières as head winemaker at Chateau Soucherie. In 2009 he started making wines under his own label when he acquired 3.5Ha of vines in the Anjou section of the Loire Valley. I’ve been watching and tasting his wines for a number of years and they always impress.
