The Wine: What is GG Riesling? When you see GG on the front of a Germany Riesling bottle this tells you that the wine is of Grosses Gewächs quality. This is assentally a Grand Cru classification of Germany wine that tells you the wine is for one of the most highly regarded vineyards on the country. These are the best, dry, Riesling that Germany has to offer and they are very special.

Kastanienbusch is one of three GG Riesling that Rebholz produces. This vineyard is a red slate site. One of the best rieslings on planet earth. This will early live for 20 years in the cellar, but is a joy to drink now. Tight on the nose and does keep unraveling with time in the glass. Citrus fruits add layers with lemon sherbet, smoke mineral and a wonderful herbal edge. The palate is ultra layered. Spice, nut, smoke with incredible salty minerality. Driver and persistence and a really hallmark. It oozes with class and sophistication.

Producer Profile

Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz are now the custodians of this 3rd generation winery in the southern Pfalz, about 30 minutes from the French border and the Alsace wine region. They were once an insider’s wine, but now have a cult following worldwide.

Hansjörg Rebholz: For more than 50 years, we've been making wines containing only what nature intended for them. We do not chaptalize our wines (the addition of sugar prior to fermentation in order to increase the alcohol content), nor do we use a 'Süßreserve' (unfermented grape must added to the finished wine prior to bottling). We are certified biodynamic. Part of the VDP. Hansjörg Rebholz was Winemaker of the Year 2013 (Falstaff) and Winemaker of the Year 2002 (Gault Millau). Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz has the top 5 out of 5 grapes rating in the Gault Millau (with 10 other winemakers). Also, Hansjörg Rebholz is one of the movers and shakers in the Grosses Gewächs movement in Germany.
